On the southern side of Tiananmen Square, this monument was completed in 1958 and stands on the site of the old Outer Palace Gate. The 36-meter obelisk, made of Qingdao granite, bears bas-relief carvings of key revolutionary events (one relief shows the Chinese destroying opium in the 19th century) as well as appropriates calligraphy from Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai.
