Mt. Everest Area
Also called Qomolangma by Tibetans, Mt. Everest is the highest mountain in the world. In 2005, the Chinese government declared its latest elevation: 8844.43 meters above sea level, instead of the previous height 8848.13 meters. The mountain is located on the border between China and Nepal, which is part of the Himalaya range.
The mountain has become a big draw for world's mountaineers. In recent years, more and more mountaineers venture from the Everest Base Camp to conquer the world's highest peak, while tourists trek to the foot of the peak to enjoy its beauty. The area of Mt. Everest has been developed into a national natural reserve, wherein numerous kinds of plants, wild animals can be well protected.
At the foot of Mt. Everest is located the highest temple in the world - Rongbuk Monastery. With the altitude of about 5000 meters and 25 km in the distance, it is also the best point to appreciate the scenery of Mt. Everest. Rongbuk Glacier around this area is also the largest among all the glaciers here.
